Your Heirloom Guide

Akiko & Co. — Frequently Asked Questions

Authenticity & Origin

Are your kimonos genuine?

Yes - every heirloom is an authentic vintage Japanese garment, handpicked in Japan and imported directly. Each piece is one-of-one, created decades ago by artisans and preserved to be worn, treasured, and passed on again.

Sizing & Fit

Do kimonos fit all sizes?

Most of our haori jackets and full-length kimonos are a free size - traditionally worn wrapped, layered, or draped, making them versatile for many body shapes. Lengths and sleeve drops may vary.

Can they be worn casually, or only for occasions?

Both. These garments were once ceremonial, but today they can be styled for everyday quiet luxury, or reserved for life’s rarest moments.

Care & Preservation

How do I clean my kimono?

We recommend dry cleaning only. Store her in a cool, dry space away from direct sunlight. Each piece is decades old - treat her as art.

How should I store my heirloom?

Hang, or fold traditionally.

Care & Alterations

What is the white stitching on my kimono?

Some vintage kimonos have white stitching called Shitsuke-ito (しつけ糸) — traditional basting threads to keep their shape in storage. They’re not flaws and can be gently removed before wear.

Can kimonos be tailored to fit me?

Yes - while each piece follows traditional Japanese sizing, kimonos can be tailored to your desired length (O-naoshi お直し). Many clients also style them with a simple belt for an effortless, modern fit.
